Scott Shane's book unearths the story of Thomas Smallwood, born into slavery in Maryland, who purchased his freedom and began working to free enslaved people, coining the term "Underground Railroad". Named one of the best ten books of 2023 by Publishers Weekly. Supported by M & T Charitable Foundation.
